A section of lawyers on Thursday moved the Calcutta high court, seeking suo motu contempt proceedings against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her comments against the judiciary on August 14. A division bench, comprising Chief Justice J N Patel and Justice Joymalyo Bagchi, refused to start suo motu proceedings against Banerjee after the matter was mentioned before it.
The Calcutta high court on Tuesday refused to accept the West Bengal State Election Commission's plea for 800 companies of central armed police force for holding the panchayat poll in the state and directed that the state may requisition them from other states or the Centre if there was any shortfall.
Also directed the company not make any financial transaction till further orders.
The permission is subject to some restrictions including a cap of 4,000 on the number of attendees.
